National Reading Month was created by the National Education Association to encourage Americans of all ages to read every day. Every March, when it is held nationwide, Literacy of Legacy and its huge team of volunteers, partners and students participate through our own programs: Real Men Read, Real Women Read and Real Kids Read.
The goal? Sending a powerful message to students that reading is a cool thing to do! Plus, because of our experience, we know that reading aloud is one of the most important ways adults can connect to young people. So, through these programs, we encourage people throughout the community to set aside 30-60 minutes on a designated day in March to read aloud at local elementary schools, senior homes and apartment buildings to share their love of reading. And we can help: we organize sessions and provide transportation for the young.
“The smiles on the seniors’ and young children’s faces show just how much they appreciate being read to,” said Dr. Jonella Mongo, a LOL literacy consultant. “It’s really a fun event for the young and the young at heart especially during this high-tech era of cell phones, social media and online games. We want them to see real people reading real books!”
